I was surprised to learn that Canon actually DOES partner with some 3rd party paper manufacturers and they do provide ICC profiles for 3rd party papaer that work with Canon software such as Canon Print Studio Pro. If someone could provide a helpful explanation, which might possibly include how such affects the actual printing, I'd be most grateful? It does seem to me that thickness is something that would affect the printer and there might be a straightforward unit of measure that could be used to determine what it is.

I'm no expert on the full line of the Canon brand of paper but I suspect that there is some terminology here that might have something to do with the way that Canon describes its' various paper products. It seems to me that it should be desired buy apparently the driver has an automatic method of determining what to use when it is not, by default, specified. I've now discovered how ICC profiles can be selected if desired. This was partly because it seemed to me that ICC profiles should be selectable and it wasn't so obvious how make such a selection. Based on the descriptions contained in the selection list I started off thinking that this corresponded to ICC profiles for the various types of paper.
On my new Canon Pixma Pro-100 the driver allows something called "Media Type" to be selected.
